What is data?

What is data?

Data is essentially a collection of anything from numbers and figures to text and symbols. It is basically unprocessed information.

Example of data:

  • Temperature records throughout the day noted down in a record book
  • Daily attendance of students in class recorded in attendance book
  • Body measurements noted by tailor for stitching your new suit

Note: data should be stored either in digital or physical format.

Data ——–> Processed——-> get Information

Let’s see what data is comprised of,

  • Data could be numbers, text, images, videos, social media posts, email etc…

Let’s see different kinds of data,

  • If data is placed in table (also known as database comprised of  rows and column) then we call it as structured data
    • Eg: Data stored in excel sheets
  • If data is just stored as text, email or social media post, here there is no structure to store the data. So we call this as un-structured data
    • Eg: your thoughts scribbled on notepad, email with text and images etc.
  • Ok now, what if data is a mix of both structured and structured data? Does it exist? Yes this is known as semi-structured data
    • Eg: Jason file
